The Lighter Side of the Craft

I’m a firm believer that if you can’t appreciate the lighter side of your religion, then you probably can’t appreciate a good joke.  Taking things too seriously is how arguments get started, and honestly, who wants to be known as “the person who can’t take a joke”?  Don’t get me wrong, there is still the right place and the right time for everything, so do try to make sure everyone is at ease and relaxed before you go marching in with the jokes.  It’s just common sense.

As a witch, it would be pretty hypocritical of me to be upset by a pagan joke when so many of the Gods and Goddesses themselves seem to have a great sense of humour.
If you want to get sort of technical, the sacred aspect of this kind of humour is that it can put other people at ease and present them with information in a “fun” way, rather than by “preaching”.

Here are a few Witchy and Pagan jokes, so relax…have a laugh at yourself!

Q: What do you call 13 witches in a hot-tub?
A: A self cleaning coven.

Q: How many Druids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: One to hold the bulb and 12 to drink enough to make the room spin.

Q: How many Witches does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Depends what you want it changed into.

Q: How many toads does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Only one if you can remember which one used to be the electrician.

A Ritual to Help you “Lighten Up”

You can adapt this for basically any purpose you like, but this one is particular is for when you need a lift; for when you need to see a little humour in your everyday life.  It really is a lot of fun, and when life gets you down, you need a little fun.

Set up your altar, but make a horrid mess of it.  Make the surface of your altar reflect the chaos that you’re feeling at the moment…get in touch with that frustration and allow yourself to feel it.  If you want to dress in your grubbiest of clothes, take off your make-up and take down your hair, do it!  It’s important that you fully allow yourself to feel all of these things.
Stand in front of your altar and hold your hands up high. Accept the fact you need a little help and reach out for it.  Say something like:

All the powers of the elements, Earth Air Fire Water and Spirit
I welcome you to my circle of chaos!
All the powers of Chaos, of Laughter, Fun and Mischief,
I honour you!
Thank you for my lost house keys, the washing that keeps falling off the line, the cat hair on my good jacket, and the burnt toast this morning.
Thank you for reminding me that confusion and chaos makes me ask what I need to know and examine what I do know.

If you’re alone, try to think of something that always makes you laugh.  Be it a line from a favourite movie, or a joke you heard on the radio, allow yourself to have a little bit of a giggle.  If you can’t think of anything funny, try sitting there and pretending to laugh; chances are that once you  realize how silly you look sitting there and forcing yourself to laugh, you won’t be able to stop laughing for real.  It may sound strange, but believe me, it works!!  Keep in mind you’re actually raising power while doing this, and that power has to go somewhere…so let it go.  Have a belly laugh.  Giggle if you will, just let it all go.  Give thanks to the Gods of Chaos and Laughter, clear your circle, and relax.

You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel once you accept the fact that sometimes bad things are going to happen, and there’s not much you can do except ride it out.
I don’t expect that you will have been rolling on the floor in laughter at the jokes here, but you must admit, I’ll bet their absurdity made you smirk.

In Love and Light,
Kia

Tis the witching hour of night,
Or bed is the moon and bright,
And the stars they glisten, glisten,
Seeming with bright eyes to listen
For what listen they?
