Witchcraft - World of WiccaBook of ShadowsCreating a witch craft bookContrary to what television and movies would have you believe, a Book of Shadows or “BoS” is not a centuries old tome filled with mysterious spells and incantations. Those new to the Craft are often a bit disappointed at this fact, as most of us would like to think that there are such books out there. That’s just not the case. Back in “the day”, the fear of being discovered was so great, that any wisdom and secrets handed down were done so verbally; not to mention the other fact that the ability to read and write was given mostly to the wealthy. Even Nostradamus wrote his prophecies in code for fear of being accused as a witch.
This leads us to the question: If TV and movies are wrong, then what exactly is a real BoS, and where do you find one? Basically, a good Book of Shadows will serve two main purposes; the first being a witch craft reference guide of sorts. A place where you keep tables and correspondences, spells and rituals that you’d like to try, divinatory meanings, things of that nature. The other purpose is more personal. Here you would keep track of dreams, personal tarot readings, spells and rituals that you’ve tried and the results you’ve had, etc. It’s more magickal journal than workbook. The best, and cheaper, solution is to purchase a normal three ringed binder. This not only solves the addition/removal of pages quite nicely, but you can also let your imagination go wild when it comes to decorating the outside. As for the inside, this takes a little more thought. If you prefer to keep the “handmade” feel to your book, you may prefer to handwrite your pages but don’t go overboard on the script. Keep in mind that you’ll be using your witch craft book by candle light sometimes, so you’ll want to make sure that the lettering is large and clear enough for you to make out. If you’d prefer to use the computer, you can type out your pages and print them OR you could bypass the whole “book” idea completely and keep your information stored on a disk or CD. It’s entirely your call.
The main thing to remember is, when creating your own Book of Shadows, it should be a reflection of who you are as a spiritual being and who you’d eventually like to become. It’s very personal and outside of a coven setting, often very private. If you’ve started a book and you’re not happy with it, start over! Don’t be discouraged because it didn’t turn out perfect the first time; I believe I started about 8 or 9 before I finally settled on a design that I liked. There are literally hundred of online Book of Shadows, written by people of all traditions, Witch and Pagan alike…the resources are out there! Brightest Blessings!
